White oak has a light colored to white sapwood, and the heartwood is light to dark brown. Michigan grown timber produces stock that is very uniform in color with minimal sapwood and mineral. White oak is mostly straight grained with a medium to coarse texture. White oak has longer rays than red oak. White oak machines well.

White oak is used in flooring, furniture, kitchen cabinets, doors, architectural millwork and mouldings, and coffins and caskets. Some unique applications include railway sleepers, timber bridges, and barrel staves.
